Oliver Twist

Summary

Oliver Twist is the story of a boy born outside of marriage, brought up in an orphan's institution that starves its children to death. Escaping from this horror to London, the boy Oliver falls in with a gang of criminal children led by a grown up, Fagin. Oliver is, at last, looked after, fed and clothed - the gang treat Oliver with some kindness where he has had only brutality from so-called "respectable society" - but the gang also leads Oliver into a life of crime and peril, and he is soon in trouble. Oliver is rescued by a wealthy victim, Mr. Brownlow. But the rest of the gang are not so lucky, and Oliver sees the full force of brutality unleashed on his former criminal comrades.


Characters

  Oliver Twist : He is an Orphan who endures a miserable existence in a workhouse and then is placed with an undertaker. He escapes and travels to London where he meets the Artful Dodger, leader of a gang of juvenile pickpockets, Naively unaware of their unlawful activities. Oliver is led to the lair of their elderly criminal trainer Fagin.

  Mr. Brownlow : Nice old man, he has taken a better look at him. Oliver's caretakers, Oliver father's close friend. He is later revealed to be Oliver's great uncle.

Fagin : Odd-looking old man. Born in London, he is describe as "Grotesque" to look at. He is the leader of a group of children, the Artful Dodger and Charley Bates among them, whom he teaches to make their livings by pickpocketing and other criminal activities in exchange for a roof over their heads. He was portrayed as a relatively humorous but still darker sides to the character's nature are shown when he beats the Artful Dodger for not bringing Oliver back, making Charley cry for mercy, in his attempted beating of Oliver for trying yo escape after the thieves have kidnapped him.

  Artful Dodger (Jack Dawkins) : He is pickpocket, so called for his skill and cunning in that respect. He is the leader of the gang of child criminals. trained by the elderly Fagin. He becomes Oliver's closest friend but he betrays him when Oliver is mistakenly caught. He tried to make him a pickpocket. He also has a close relationship with Charley Bates. He has great respect for Fagin, to whom he delivers all of the pickpocketing spoils without question.
